narrative: it's time for some changes
a small lesson in self-preservation
He's not good at a lot of things. Well, correction, he is good at a lot of things but not always the things that actually matter.

He excelled in school. He joined the Air Force at 18 and excelled there too, shooting through the ranks and remained there until he was 28. He returned home to take over Trevisan International when his father passed away. Only, he didn't take over. His brother Jonathan did, the unreliable, irresponsible Jonathan was named Chief Executive Officer while Adam was given the chance to prove his worth as the Chief Technical Officer. As pissed off as Adam was, after being groomed for the position only to have it handed to his older brother, he played it off while he wasn't. Because Adam was better behind the scenes, being the brains of things, not the face. His unwavering loyalty kept him from protesting.

So when the Chief Financial Officer left the company and Adam had to step in as the interim CFO, he didn't say a word. And when Jon really started to run off on vacations without telling anyone, or just not showing up for work, or not doing his job and Adam had to step in as CEO as well, well he didn't say a word. Because of his loyalty, and because that was one of the things that Adam was and is good at: shoving down his own opinion for the betterment of the company. After all, it was what their father wanted, and when their mother died, she wanted to know her sons would still work together and get along.

It doesn't stop Adam from getting pissed from hearing Jon talk about running off on vacation again, or that he didn't decide it was worth coming into work that day. It also doesn't stop Adam from getting pissed that the board is in no rush to hire a new CFO, because Well Adam, you're doing such a great job, and hiring a new CFO is just not in our budget right now, and the worst of it was when it came from Jon. Because everyone forgot that as the interim CFO, Adam was in charge of the budgets, but no, that was that.

But he doesn't say anything, because work needs to come first. Keeping the company running needs to come first, and he's dependable. He's reliable. He's someone that everyone expects to just be there and take care of things.

There is an issue here. He's good at professional things. He's good at working. He's not so good at keeping his own life in check.

As of late, Adam found himself dealing with a variety of odd things. One being that for some reason, he had a week where he didn't remember anything. He didn't remember saying or doing anything, it was as if it was a complete blackout. But usually blackouts, which he hasn't had since he was 19, and getting reprimanded for it by his Commander, were not his usual thing.

Waking up realizing he had superhuman type strength, well that wasn't his usual thing too. He needed a whole new bedroom set after that, and it hadn't even been for a good reason. Apparently, stubbing his toe on the bed meant the bed went flying as if he kicked it.

So he had thrown himself into work. Because his personal life made no sense. He wanted it to make sense of course, he wanted something to look forward to, but work always came first. Work always had to come first. No matter what he did, Adam was the responsible reliable one. He couldn't be like a Jon, because there was already the Jon and Adam couldn't be him. Didn't stop him from being envious that Jon apparently seemed to have his life figured out.

While Adam has his professional workaholic side down, his personal side was neglected. Things needed to change. He needed to change.

It started with setting up an online dating account, and having one successful date. This lead to a second date but it never went further than that. This pushed him to try to get out there more though, because he wasn't going to allow himself to just let his life be devoured by work. He couldn't.

(Because after having a strange all day nightmare where work literally devoured him, he didn't actually want that to become reality.)

So he told himself he needed to get out more. And he told himself he needed to give himself a chance at seeing what else was out there.

And so...

...he did.
